Brecon to Cardiff Classic - 43 Mile Ultra Marathon

If you’re looking for a race that truly captures the spirit of South Wales, the Brecon to Cardiff Ultra is it. Now been going for over 12 years, this 43 mile point-to-point ultramarathon has firmly established itself as a "must-do" classic on the UK ultra calendar.

It’s not just a run, it’s a journey through history and geography. You start right in the heart of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, surrounded by dramatic peaks and waterfalls, and finish on the bustling outskirts of the Welsh capital. It’s widely known as a fantastic entry-level ultra for those stepping up in distance, but don't be fooled it’s still a proper day out on the legs!

Course

The beauty of the B2C (Brecon to Cardiff) ultra is its variety. The course essentially follows the River Taff from its source down to the sea, meaning the overall profile is net downhill, though your quads might argue with you by the end!

The race kicks off at 08:00 amidst the quiet beauty of the Brecon canal basin. You’ll head east along the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal before tackling the biggest climb of the day up to Torpantau. This is the high point of the route. Take a moment to breathe in the mountain air here, because from this point, it is (mostly) downhill all the way to the finish.

You’ll sweep past the stunning Pontsticill Reservoir and the Brecon Mountain Railway, running on a mix of footpaths and forestry trails.

Around the 30km mark, you hit Merthyr Tydfil. This is a crucial psychological milestone. The terrain shifts here from the rugged trails of the north to the smoother Taff Trail cycle path.

The route utilises old tramways and abandoned railway lines that once carried coal and iron to the docks, offering a flat, fast surface for the second half. You’ll pass iconic landmarks like the Cefn Coed Viaduct and Cyfarthfa Castle.

Pro Tip: Because the terrain changes so drastically, there is a dedicated drop-bag station at Merthyr College (approx. halfway). Many runners choose to swap their grippy trail shoes for cushioned road shoes here to save their feet on the tarmac run-in.

Logistics

Point-to-point races can be a logistical headache, but the Run Walk Crawl team has this dialed in.

  1. Park at the Finish: You leave your car at the finish line in Nantgarw (easy access off the M4/A470).
  2. Bus to the Start: A coach (included in your entry fee) whisks you up to Brecon in the morning.
  3. Run Back: You simply run back to your car. No waiting around for transfers when you're cold and tired!

Whether you are hunting for a jagged profile PB or just want to experience the transition from wild mountains to industrial history on foot, the Brecon to Cardiff offers a unique day out. This race sells out yearly so check out the official race website for full details.
