The Montane Lakeland 50 Mile Ultra Marathon presents a substantial trail running challenge through the rugged landscapes of the Lake District National Park. This 50 mile (roughly 80 km) point-to-point course covers the second half of the renowned Lakeland 100 route, offering significant elevation gain and varied technical terrain.
The 50 mile route commences from the Dalemain Estate, situated near Ullswater, and proceeds south-westward towards the finish in Coniston. As the second half of the Lakeland 100 course, it maintains a consistently challenging profile. Participants will traverse a diverse range of Lakeland terrain, including valley trails, open fell sides, and passes through notable areas such as Howtown, Long Sleddale, Kentmere, Ambleside, and Elterwater.
The course is characterised by substantial and continuous climbing and descending over rugged, often rocky, and undulating paths. While not encompassing the full circumnavigation of the 100-mile event, the 50-mile route still delivers a significant test of endurance and mountain running skill, particularly towards its conclusion with notable ascents before the final approach to Coniston.
The Montane Lakeland 50 ultra is as a semi-supported event. While personal crewing on the route itself is generally not permitted, comprehensive support is provided at 6 fully staffed, compulsory checkpoints. These aid stations offer a varied selection of hot and cold food, drinks and essential medical assistance.
Live GPS tracking is provided for all runners, enabling continuous monitoring by race organisers for safety purposes. All finishers receive a bespoke medal and a post-race meal upon completion.
