Running in Wales is about more than just the mileage; it is about the heritage and the challenge of the landscape.
Home to three National Parks, Eryri (Snowdonia), the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), and the Pembrokeshire Coast, Wales offers a variety of terrain from alpine-style peaks to coastal cliffs.
Despite the remote feel of many trails, most Welsh race hubs are easily accessible from major UK cities, making it the perfect location for a weekend race.
For those new to the distance, the Dragon Coastal 30 or 50 is highly recommended. Unlike the technical mountain races in the north, these coastal ultras feature flatter, non-technical trails and breathtaking scenery along the Wales Coast Path, making them a perfect entry point into the world of Welsh ultramarathons.
The Dragon Back Race is widely considered the toughest mountain race in the world, let alone Wales. It covers approximately 380km over six days, following the mountainous spine of Wales from Conwy Castle to Cardiff, with a staggering 17,400m of total ascent, nearly twice the height of Mount Everest.
The peak season for Wales ultra marathons is between April and September. While summer offers longer daylight hours for events like Ultra-Trail Snowdonia (UTS), autumn and spring provide cooler temperatures ideal for endurance running. However, Welsh weather is famously unpredictable, so carrying compulsory kit is essential year-round.
Yes, Wales hosts several iconic 100 mile races. Key events include the Dragon 100, which traverses the stunning Gower and Glamorgan heritage coasts, and the Epona 100, a brutal but beautiful loop through the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons). These races are world-class qualifiers for major international events.
Most ultras in Wales allow a mix of running and walking, especially on steep technical climbs where power hiking is a common strategy. However, always check the specific race cut-off times. Most organisers, such as those for the Beacons Ultra, welcome hikers as long as they can maintain the minimum required pace to reach checkpoints safely.
