If you are looking for an ultra marathon that blends the convenience of a city race with the escapism of the trails, the Beyond Bristol 55km Ultra is a standout choice. Part of the "Beyond Trails" series, this event proves you don't need to travel to remote mountain ranges to find a genuine adventure.
Starting and finishing right in the heart of Bristol at Museum Square, this race takes you off the beaten track and into the green corridors, ancient woodlands, and riverside paths that weave through the city and its surrounding countryside. It is the perfect "hybrid" ultra—accessible enough for beginners but scenic enough to keep seasoned runners smiling for miles.
The 55km looped ultra is a masterclass in urban trail planning, boasting a surprisingly flat profile with only around 270m of elevation gain. This makes it an incredibly fast course and a prime candidate for anyone chasing a personal best or tackling their very first ultra distance.
The journey begins by heading west alongside the River Avon, offering runners a unique perspective as they pass under the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge. You will then climb up through the stunning Leigh Woods National Nature Reserve, a section of proper trail running, before crossing over the Suspension Bridge for spectacular views back across the city.
From there, the route winds back towards the centre, joining the Frome Valley Way, a hidden gem of a riverside trail. You will explore the expansive Eastville Park and hit the Bristol to Bath Railway Path for a fast, flat 10km section on the old line, before following the River Avon Trail back into the city for a celebrated finish at the event village.
Beyond Bristol is renowned for its inclusive, "everyone is welcome" vibe. The event is fully waymarked with distinctive directional signs, meaning you can leave the map-reading stress at home and focus on your run.
There are 3 well stocked aid stations along the route and includes a generous cut-off time of 10 hours.
Whether you are a tarmac runner looking to dip your toe into trails, or an ultra-veteran wanting a fast, scenic day out in the South West, Beyond Bristol offers an unforgettable tour of the city's wilder side. For full details, please visit the official race website.
