If you're looking for a fast, flat, and ridiculously beautiful introduction to ultra running, the Serpent Trail 50k is one of the best races in the South. But it's not just for first-timers, its runnable, sandy trails make it a firm favourite for seasoned runners chasing a fast 50k time.
This is a proper point-to-point adventure, guiding you along the stunning Serpent Trail through habitats said to be rarer than rainforest.
The ultra marathon is a 50km point-to-point route, starting just outside Petworth and finishing in Petersfield. You'll be running on the southern half of the official Serpent Trail 100k, which is renowned for its incredible scenery.
Don't be put off by the "ultra" tag. With only 700 metres of elevation, this is a genuinely fast and flat course. The highest point is dealt with inside the first few miles, leaving you to enjoy the flowing, well-draining sandy trails.
The journey takes you through a classic, quintessentially English landscape of ancient woodlands, lowland heath, and greensand hills. It's a fully-marked route, so you can spend less time on navigation and more time taking in the views.
The is a brilliantly organised event, with five checkpoints spread along the route and your entry fee includes coach transport from the finish line (Petersfield) to the start line near Petworth. You just park your car, hop on the bus, and run back!
