Dales Dazzler 55K (34.4 Miles) Ultra Marathon
Wrap up your summer season with a glorious tour of the Yorkshire Dales. The Dales Dazzler lives up to its name, offering a sparkling route that takes in river valleys, open fells, and historic villages.
As Race 9 in the Punk Panther calendar, this event sits perfectly in late summer, often enjoying the best weather of the year. Starting and finishing in the market town of Skipton, the 34.4 mile (55km) course avoids the brutal northern extension of the 50 miler, instead offering a fast, scenic loop that showcases the very best of Wharfedale.
Course
The course is a masterclass in variety. After leaving Skipton, you’ll head out via Clogger Lane (CP1) towards Gargrave (CP2), picking up the famous Pennine Way and Dales Way trails.
The km (34 mile) route splits from the longer course here, avoiding the tough climb to Malham Tarn. Instead, you cut across to the picturesque village of Burnsall (CP5). From here, it’s a beautiful run back along the River Wharfe, passing the ruins of Bolton Abbey before the final push back to Skipton.
With 1,132m (3,716ft) of elevation gain, it’s challenging enough to feel like a proper day out, but runnable enough to chase a fast time.
The route is generally taped and marked, but there are sections (specifically on the Pennine Way and Dales Way) where you are expected to follow the permanent way markers. Self-navigation skills (map/GPX) are essential.
The Dales Dazzler 34.4 Mile Ultramarathon is the perfect "Goldilocks" distance. You get the big-race atmosphere and the stunning scenery of the Dales without the gruelling climbs of the 50 miler.
