Lulworth Cove 50km Ultramarathon

Running the Jurassic Coast is a bucket-list item for many, but the Lulworth Cove 50K Ultra serves it up with a distinct "RunThrough" flavour. This means you get the savage beauty of the Dorset coastline paired with a friendly, accessible race atmosphere.

Taking place in late February, this race is a brilliant early-season tester. It guarantees three things: mud, spectacular views of UNESCO World Heritage sites, and quads that will be screaming by the time you sit down. While RunThrough events are known for being beginner-friendly, do not underestimate this course. The Southwest Coast Path is relentless, but the support you get here makes the suffering worth it.

Course

The route is a tough 53km loop that showcases the very best of the Jurassic Coast.

The race begins at 08:00 from the event village near West Lulworth (Postcode BH20 5PU). You will traverse the iconic limestone arch of Durdle Door, run past the chalk giant of White Nothe, and tackle the roller-coaster hills towards Weymouth before looping back. Expect steep, grassy climbs, technical rocky descents, and lots of steps. The chalk paths can be incredibly slippery when wet, so good trail shoes with deep lugs are non-negotiable.

If you are nervous about stepping up to ultra distance, this is a great place to start. RunThrough prides itself on "flag-following" simplicity.

The course is heavily marked with flags and arrows. While carrying a GPS device/phone with the route is mandatory, you generally don't need to be a navigation expert to find your way. There are regular, well-stocked aid stations. Expect a mix of water, electrolytes, sweets, and savoury snacks to keep the engine running. It’s less "hardcore mountain race" and more "community trail party." The marshals are vocal, the music is loud, and the finish line feeling is electric.

If you want to experience the brutality of the Jurassic Coast without the pressure of strict elite cut-offs (you have a generous 12 hours), this is the one. It’s perfect for road runners looking to transition to trails, provided you’ve done some hill training!
