Step onto Scotland’s most storied battlefields and follow in the footsteps of legends with the William Wallace 50k ultramarathon. Part of the spectacular William Wallace Running Festival, this 50km ultra offers a breathtaking, historic journey through the heart of Stirling. Blending stunning Scottish countryside with centuries of history, this race allows runners to create their own moment of glory under the shadows of the Ochil Hills.
Starting in full view of the iconic National Wallace Monument, the 50km circular route is a heavily historical, mixed-terrain trail. The course is an unforgettable loop that takes runners past some of Scotland's most significant landmarks.
After setting off, you will weave your way past the Battle of Bannockburn site before heading through King’s Park, once the royal hunting ground, and the ancient gardens of the King’s Knot. As you progress, the trail climbs toward the imposing Stirling Castle, offering panoramic views over the River Forth.
The route continues past the Keir Estate (historic home of SAS founder Sir David Stirling) and through the quaint market village of Bridge of Allan. From there, runners will climb towards the Cockburn Reservoir before looping back via Cambuskenneth Abbey and taking a scenic riverside path to the finish line. Because it is run in Scotland in October, the terrain can vary from firm footpaths to muddy trails, meaning you must be prepared for everything from warm sunshine to cold, wet conditions.
If tackling the full 50km solo feels a step too far, the event offers a highly accessible relay format. Runners can enter as teams of three or six, splitting the legendary loop into manageable stages. With three or six dedicated relay changeover points along the course, the team option is a brilliant way for running clubs, colleagues, or friends to soak up the festival atmosphere and share the glory of crossing the finish line.
