Summit Mentality Backyard Ultra – Last One Standing

Get ready for a wildly different kind of ultra challenge with the Summit Mentality Backyard Ultra (Last One Standing), hosted at South Weald Cricket Club in Brentwood, Essex (CM14 5QE). This isn’t your standard fixed-distance race, instead it’s a loop that repeats each hour, on the hour, until only one runner remains.

Every hour you start a new lap of approximately 4.167 miles (6.7 km). You’ll begin together with your fellow runners. Then you finish together, and wait until the next hour begins. If you choose to stop, or if you miss the start of a lap, your race is over. But if you keep lining up each hour, it’s you versus the clock, you versus yourself, you versus everyone who keeps going. There’s no set total distance to chase, no time to beat. The challenge is simple but brutal, can you go again?

Course

The route is a 100% trail loop that crosses farmers’ fields. You can expect a mix of mud, uneven ground and conditions that change with the weather, so trail shoes are definitely recommended. The course is fully marked so no navigation is needed, you just have to focus on getting the lap done and getting back to the start pen before the next bell.

This is a self-sufficient race, so you'll need to bring your own nutrition and supplies for as many laps as you plan to run. However, there will be basic food and drink available for runners, as well as toilet facilities, changing rooms and even a massage therapist on-site to help with any niggles.

Whether you complete one lap or twenty-one, this event is about challenging yourself and being part of an amazing community. Every runner receives a medal for their efforts, with a special prize reserved for the Last One Standing.
