South Downs 200 Mile Ultramarathon - UK Ultra

Welcome to 200 miles of sweeping chalk downland, ancient woodlands and pure endurance. Organised by the esteemed team at UK Ultra, the South Downs 200 mile ultramarathon is a colossal, continuous trail event that demands absolute respect. If you are looking to step into the elite tier of 200 mile racing, this beautifully brutal loop is the ultimate arena.

Runners have exactly 100 hours to traverse the entirety of the South Downs National Park from East to West and back again. It is a true test of pacing, sleep deprivation management and unyielding mental resilience.

Course

Starting and finishing in the picturesque village of East Dean, near Eastbourne, the route is essentially one massive loop that follows some of the South of England's most historic paths, primarily the Monarch's Way and the legendary South Downs Way.

  • The Terrain: You will be running on 95% trail, with barely 1% tarmac. Expect a highly runnable but relentless mix of chalk trails, grassy ridgelines and forest tracks.
  • The Elevation: Do not let the rolling greenery deceive you. Over the course of 200 miles, the route packs in a staggering 6,705m (22,000 feet) of elevation gain (and descent). You will be constantly tackling steep climbs and bouncy descents.
  • The Navigation: Unlike some 200 milers that require intense map-reading skills, the South Downs 200 is a fully marked and supported route, allowing you to focus your mental energy on simply moving forward.

Running 200 miles requires exceptional on-course logistics, and UK Ultra delivers a masterclass in runner support.

  • Aid and Sleep Stations: The route features 12 fully stocked aid stations. Crucially, three of these are designated sleep stations fully catered with hot meals to help you manage the inevitable exhaustion.
  • Crews and Pacers: You are not alone out there. Support crews are welcome (at designated points), and you are allowed to pick up a pacer from mile 50 onwards to help guide you through the long, dark nights.
