50 MILE ULTRA FAQs

Is a 50 mile ultra a good first ultramarathon?

A 50 mile race is a significant but achievable step up from a marathon or a 50k ultra. Many runners successfully complete a 50 miler as their first ultra. The key is consistent training and choosing the right event. Look for races on GB Ultra Runner calendar with generous cut-off times and relatively flat terrain to make your first experience a positive one.

How long does it take to train for a 50 mile ultra marathon?

This depends on your current fitness, but a runner with a solid marathon base should plan for a dedicated training block of at least 4-6 months. A good training plan will focus on gradually increasing your long-run distance, incorporating back-to-back long runs and practising your nutrition strategy.

What is a typical finishing time for a 50 mile ultramarathon?

Finishing times vary hugely depending on the runners ability and the course terrain and elevation. For a relatively flat 50 mile ultra, finishing times can range from 8 hours for faster runners to 16 hours or more. Always check the race cut-off time, which is the maximum time allowed to complete the course.

What is the difference between a 50k and a 50 mile ultra?

The main difference is the distance. A 50k is approximately 31 miles, whereas a 50 mile ultra is, of course, 50 miles (around 80.5 kilometres). This extra 19 miles presents a much greater challenge in terms of endurance, nutrition and mental resilience. Pacing becomes even more critical in a 50 miler.

What mandatory kit do I need for a 50 mile race?

Mandatory kit lists exist for your safety. While each race has its own specific requirements, common items include: a waterproof jacket, a fully charged mobile phone, a head torch (for early starts or late finishes), a survival blanket, and the capacity to carry at least 1 litre of water. Always check the official race website for the precise kit list before race day.

How can I find a 50 mile ultra marathon near me?

You are in the right place! Use the filter options above to search for 50 mile ultramarathons by county, elevation or month.

Why are 50 milers UK events so popular among the ultra-running community?

The Double Marathon Challenge: Running 50 miles is nearly back-to-back marathons. It shifts the challenge from purely physical to deeply mental, requiring strategy, pacing, and strict nutrition management.
Daylight Finish: Unlike 100 mile races that run through the night, a well-paced 50 miler can often be completed in a single day, meaning you get to enjoy the incredible scenery of 50 mile Ultramarathons UK from start to finish without needing to navigate in the dark.
Stepping Stone to 100 Miles: If you dream of completing a 100 mile ultra, a 50 miler is the ultimate proving ground to test your gear, dialing in your fueling strategies and building your mental resilience.

How should I train for a 50 mile ultramarathon?

Training for 50 mile Ultramarathons UK typically takes 16 to 24 weeks if you already have a solid running base. The focus should be on time on your feet rather than pure speed. Back-to-back long runs on weekends (for example, running 20 miles on Saturday and 15 miles on Sunday) are a staple of 50 mile training to teach your body to run on tired legs.

What should I eat during a 50 miler?

In a 50-mile race, fuelling is just as important as running. You will need to consume between 200 and 300 calories per hour. Relying solely on energy gels can cause stomach issues over 10+ hours, so most runners mix gels with real food offered at checkpoints, such as sandwiches, boiled potatoes, salted nuts and fruit.
